Lair na Coille

A sustainable Project inspired by the celtic Druids.

Do you ever feel so enchanted by your surroundings that you feel as if you've been whisked away to another place? Feeling so at peace, listening to the sounds of the wind catching the trees, birds whistling their happy tunes. Touching rough bark on trees, the crumbling of leaves, and the feel of silky flower petals. But the smell of no man-made object, just clean, floral air. I always feel as if nature speaks to me, the hum of the oak, speaking its wise words. Lair Na Coille means 'forest floor' in Gaelic/Celtic. Languages are still spoken, but are no longer common. When there were whispers of magic, of elves and a faraway land that goes by many names, Otherworld. It is said that this magical wood was what spoke to the Druids, giving them wisdom; hence their name, meaning 'knower of the oak'. Lair Na Coille touches the idea of creating garments that feel as if they'd been pulled from the magical world of the Other. But also the feeling of being in nature itself, as if a Druid would wear them. Looking at flowing aspects and big hoods made the designs feel like foraging clothing. I could picture someone running through the woods wearing these clothes, completely taken over by nature. Using second-hand materials was super important to me, especially since my project was based on nature. I wanted to make sure my work did not harm the world. Hence why I sourced my materials second-hand rather than buying new. Saving these fabrics from landfill, but also not adding any more of a footprint to the world.
